Upgrade Skincare for Colder Months

Now that winter is upon us, the lower humidity, harsh winds, and dry indoor heat begin a roll in your skin health. These conditions draw moisture away from the skin and can lead to more dead skin cell buildup. Having grown up in Maine, these sudden weather changes never seem to be something you get used to.

If you want to protect your skin this winter, check out our recommended products below.

1. Swap out your current cleanser for a hydrating, cream cleanser.

Water-based cleansers are great for oily skin, but in the winter, since the air has been stripped of its moisture, your skin will need all the help it can get. This is the best time to swap whatever cleanser you are currently using and try a cream cleanser. This will help restore the natural oils in your skin, all while cleansing away impurities. If you have oily skin and worry this may be too much for you, try a gel cleanser instead. This uses both water and oil ingredients to cleanse the skin without stripping away the moisture.

2. Scrub the dead skin away.

Your winter skincare routine would not be complete without a nice exfoliation. Since the skin barrier function is at its slowest during winter, dead skin cells are more likely to build up. This is what gives your skin the dry, flaky appearance that appears so casually during winter. An exfoliating scrub is a great way to gently eliminate winter skin buildup- also consider an exfoliating brush to assist with the whole body.

3. Add an extra layer of hydration.

Looking to add an additional boost of hydration? Applying a hydrating serum has become a winter skincare step you can’t skip! Using serums or any hydrating products before your moisturizer is a great way to pack in that extra moisture and key ingredients. Your skin will drink in all it can get in the winter.

4: Add your choice of moisturizer

These cold months are when your skin needs a little extra TLC. The cold months are doing their best to cause chaos for your skin, resulting in a buildup of dead skin cells, which causes discomfort from dryness to redness. That’s where a good moisturizer comes in clutch. People suggest that winter calls for an extra heavy moisturizer. Although that may be true for some people- it is not true for all. Be sure to pay close attention to the ingredients in your products, and their heaviness. Look for face creams containing ingredients that winter skin needs. Some great examples are Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and Jojoba Oil.

5. SPF!

Even if the sun isn’t in full force, sunscreen is a surefire way to protect against radiation and free radical damage. This one step goes a long way to prevent premature aging. You may not have to protect your skin with SPF every single day during winter, but use your best judgment when you think the sun is hiding behind the clouds.

I feel comfortable saying, winter is certainly NOT everyone’s favorite season, and it’s probably not your skin’s favorite either. However, this doesn’t mean winter has to cause chaos for you or your skin. Try to make the most of the cold weather and allow yourself to make these beneficial, gentle skincare changes.
